Valeria G. Troubina

short biography

Valeria Troubina was born on February 14, 1966 in Ukraine/USSR. Shortly after, she moved with her family to the Sakhalin Island (located off of Siberia's Pacific coast North of Japan). Growing up on the Far East Russia with her grandparents, she started drawing and painting at a very young age. Upon her family's return from the Far East to Ukraine, Valeria took classes at the Art School of Lugansk, Ukraine. After successful Golden Medal graduation at the age of fourteen she entered Lugansk College of Fine Arts specializing in Painting and Design. In 1985 she was accepted as a student at the Kiev State Academy of Art where she majored in Stage and Costume Design for Theater & Film. During the six academic years she studied Painting, Sculpture, Graphic Arts, Restoration, and History of Art among other disciplines. In 1988 Troubina began participating in Art exhibitions in Kiev, Moscow, and throughout Eastern Europe a year later; in 1990 she became a member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine.

After graduating from the Academy Valeria became known as one of the activists among the group of Transavantgarde artists called 'Parizhskaya Communa' (Paris Commune), named after the street name of the art studio location. The group was considered to be dissident in challenging the established doctrines of the hardliners of the Ministry of Culture - the group's shows were frequently turned into scandals or even shut down, labeled as 'politically incorrect'. Nevertheless, they achieved a well deserved recognition both locally and internationally with exhibitions throughout Eastern and Western Europe.

In 1993, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Troubina was invited to take part in an exhibition of contemporary Ukrainian art "Angels Over Ukraine" held during the International Edinburgh Art Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, and curated by 369 Gallery, Edinburgh, the British Council of Visiting Artists, and International Renaissance Foundation of Ukraine. While in Scotland, Valeria continued collaborating with 369 Gallery on the exhibition "New Ukrainian Painting - After the Apocalypse", held at the headquarters of the Economist in London. Upon completing this project in 1994, she came to the United States where she exhibited her art in Illinois, California, and Hawaii. Currently Valeria Troubina resides in Berkeley, California.
